While walking in the snow last Saturday, I noticed much more neck and back tension.  I find that most of my patients with chronic pain have a bit of an exacerbation when the weather gets colder and the footing becomes less sure.  One way to warm up the body is to contract muscles, contributing to habitual tension in the body.  When our balance and stability is challenged (say by a slippery sidewalk), the muscles tend to wind up a bit more than when walking on stable and non-slip surfaces.
